Skills that are Incredibly Important for Parents to Master

October 2nd 2011 -

Many parents assume that everything they have to know about raising their kids is self evident, but sometimes it’s necessary to pick up some new skills. Nobody’s perfect; we all have at least one or two weaknesses or things about our parenting styles that have room for improvement. The world is also changing fast -for example, many parents didn’t today didn’t grow up with the internet, but now they have to carefully watch how their kids are affected by the online world. Keep reading to learn which parenting skills are the most important for every parent to have.

It is important to be consistent when you discipline your kids. Many people have problems getting this under control but if you can’t do it you can be sure that your kids won’t see any reason to take your directions seriously. You need to think long and hard before putting your rules and punishments in place; making threats and promises that you don’t live up to is disastrous. For example, if you’ve taken away television privileges for your son for a week, don’t give in a few days into the punishment. Otherwise you are going to start sending messages that your word doesn’t actually mean much and that it is safe to ignore it. Kids are going to, of course, test their boundaries so you need to be firm. Every parent out there today is concerned about their child’s safety but they also know that they can’t keep their eyes on their kids every second. That’s why what matters most is giving them at least some basic information about the task and then making sure that they know how to find you or some other grownup who can help them if the necessity arises. As soon as a child is old enough to learn this information, make sure he/she knows his/her full name, phone number and address. They should also know how to reach you at either home or work. It might also be a good idea to provide a cell phone that they can use for calling you or 911 if an emergency arises. They make cell phone plans just for these purposes. If your child is in a location where there is a friend or relative who can get to them sooner than you can, be sure that he or she knows how to contact that person.

Many parents have a hard time denying kids whatever they want. Being able to say “no” in a way that is firm but still kind is a skill that you should have for your own peace of mind as well as for your kids’ needs. Kids need to be told, as much as you can, why it is a bad idea to let them have every single thing they want. Allowing them to eat as much ice cream as they want can make them sick now and obese later on. Even when your kids don’t care about your explanation or seem to not understand it, it is still sinking in somewhere in their brains so it is definitely worth repeating. In situations like this, especially because your kids will probably keep asking you, it is vital that you stick to your guns.

While you may find some parts of being a parent totally natural, there will naturally be some parts that you’ll have to work harder at. Do not try to be perfect, but work hard at learning from your experiences. You need to remember that you do not have to repeat your parents’ parenting style and that you can make adjustments to your behavior if you want to to help you become a better parent. Being a parent is, among other things, a learning process.
